It only takes a few moments for this product to seduce you but within a few hours you are left broken hearted and disappointed. Outstanding picture performance and functioning in all areas except the following:br /br /* Faulty pop-up keyboard rejects 100,000 ATT and 45,000 T-Mobile hot spotsbr /* All Starbucks Barnes Nobel connections prevented, software failure br /* Built in speaker is useless due to little volume.br /* Video Recording fails to work. Unable to get local programs guides.br /* Company techs say HD plug in not sold out, but glitches prevent releasebr /* Video is structured for analog only due to HD plug in's not available.br /* Video playback in analog only means displays over 32" are very poorbr /* No built in or optional microphone prevents use of all IM voice, memos or VOIP programsbr /* Customer service tech support listen well and are understanding but they are unwilling to provide resolutions or dates of product fixes.br /* Home programming keyboard is too small and awkward to hold in both hands and to use thumbs for entry ... this is a one finger unit which for a home unit is not necessary. Most frustrating.br /br /I hated to return this produce due to the above failures but it is clear to see that the product was rushed out prematurely to meet the holiday product season without proper testing and support. In a few months with some product redesign and consideration it is clear this product will be re-released with a new model # and will be the ultimate way to go.br /br /I really am heartbroken ... shame on you ARCHOS !!!

I'm an iPod fan. Yes, i've owned every version/generation and probably will continue to do so. But when I met the Archos family something clicked. It was like meeting that cute girl across the room for the first time.br /br /I first was introduced to Archos about 3 years ago. My friend had some movies and music on his. It was interesting. I didn't have much need for such a bulky product. But then I came across the Archos 5 online and did some research. It was perfect, or so I thought...br /br /Let's start with the basic Pros:br /br /1. It's big enough to watch video on without hurting your eyes.br /br /2. It's recent firmware updates have kept this guy going strong since i've bought it.br /br /3. The hard drive is HUGE! If you are using this for mp3's and videos on long trips you will have more than enough space. We drove from San Francisco to L.A. and back and never ran out of media.br /br /4. It's sturdy. You don't feel like you are going to break it while you are using it.br /br /5. When you have the right accessories this thing wails on the competition.br /br / A The DVR Station is well worth the extra $100. It can use your Archos as a DVR and you can record those TV programs or On Demand Movies for your watching pleasure. I'm also a DJ/VJ so I can record my sets with video in real time from the club. You also get the handy DC charger so as not to use USB to charge your device.br /br / B Buy the plug-ins, they rock, and it's worth the money to make sure you are using the Archos 5's full potential.br /br /6. The internet, mail and other appz work just fine. I have not had anything crash, bug, or tweak out yet. br /br /7. Battery Time is AWESOME! The numbers are pretty high, I did about 6 hours for video and over 12 for audio with more life remaining.br /br /br /Ok, now the cons:br /br /1. You do have to pay for the extra accessories. Some of the prices can be steep.br /br /2. Some plug-ins aren't available yet.br /br /3. The Archos website is pretty lame and confusing. Be careful there, you may end up buying something from th UK store by accident.br /br /OVERALL:br /br /The Archos 5 is a feat of genius. I can check my mail and surf the web from any wifi. I can watch days of movies, listen to weeks of audio. Share my pictures with friends. I can record t.v. and any other audio/video source I put in to it (with the dvr station or dvr snap-on or course).br /I have not had any battery or program bugs at all in the month I have owned it.br /br /For your $400-$500 for a reliable sturdy, forward thinking touchscreen PMP that's miles above the iPod, the Archos is perfect. If you don't want to invest in, or have the need to go to some of the extremes i've listed, stick with the Zune or iPod. They will play just about anything you want them too, but they aren't as flexible as the Archos 5.
A Whole New Category-- IMT? November 9, 2008
I've had the Archos 5 250 for several weeks and I'm enjoying all of the main features. Amazing screen-bright, good color quality and resolution. Movies and photos are beautifully reproduced. Web experience is quick, clean and flexible-fit width, full or enlarged. Music quality is dependent upon speakers. I use noise-canceling headphones-excellent.br / Archos support has been responsive and their web site has an informative tutorial. I'm not very good with all of the current technology, so I need help. I have a PC for business, a MacBook Pro for music, photo sharing, etc. For lots of travel, I have used my iPod classic 30g, my MacBook, my Kindle and now my Archos.5. br /
Great overall with a few flaws November 5, 2008
Used Time ~ 3 daysbr /br /I bought the Archos 5 after I saw multiple updates on the buggy firmware. br /br /Pros:br /-Excellent screen - the screens totally blows me away with crispy color and detailed resolution.br /-Fairly good Flash 9 support - I tried to play some flash games and youtube- most of them worked, so I'm happy with it.br /-Better than average codec support - Unlike IPod Touch, you can basically just drag and drop your video and it will work. br /br /Cons:br /-Wifi works at my home, but at my work place. Archos 5 only supports the most common secured network, but not the more complicated ones. br /- Codec support - I bought archos 5 mainly for its broad codec support. However, the lack of support of mkv container is somewhat a disappointment.br /- Weight - Coming from IPod nano, the archos 5 is comparatively bulkier, althought pocketable. Let's just say this: the weight of archos 5 is somewhat similar to an IPod Classic, so be prepared. br /br /In general, I'm quite happy about the archos 5, although I really wish that they support mkv. To give a detail score, that would be 85/100. Go Archos!

Pros: 1.4.8 inch touch screen at 800x480.br /2. 250gb HD.br /3. AAC support (pay extra but worth it.)br /4. Great sound.br /5. The best web browser on any Mp3, PMP player.If you think the iphone has a good browser then think again. Like browsing on a laptop.Flash 8 and 9 support.br /6. Easy to Navigate and great interface. The fonts look so clear. Beautiful and yet simple GUI.br /7. Kickstand.br /8. AVI support. Ripped some DVD to AVI at 720x480 at 2.5mbps. Amazing detail. Like watching a HD movie.br /Cons: 1.Battery Life.br /2. Its not Open source.br /Summary: This is the best Mp3, PMP player i ever owned and let me tell you, i don't regret spending almost 500 bucks on it.br /I owned alot of mp3 players (ipod classic, Zune, Cowon D2) and they all had their cons. This does have it cons but its not as bad the as the others.br /Avi movies looks soo good on this, almost feels like watching HD content.
